His wife has just died and being an extremely independent and cantankerous old man, he refuses to move in with his son. He lives alone in a neighbourhood that has been slowly taken over by immigrants and gangs. His prize possession is his 1972 ‘Gran Torino’ which he keeps in mint condition. One day his young Hmong neighbour, Thao under pressure from the local gangs tries to steal his car. Walt almost shoots him but then realises he actually likes the boy and he sets out to reform him and make him a responsible citizen. He threatens the gangs who try to control Thao and also helps him get a job. This backfires when Thao’s sister is assaulted by the gang members. Walt realises that as long as these gangs exist, his young neighbours will never have a decent life. He takes matters into his own hands and confronts the gangs, paying a heavy personal price.
